MKII Astro Compass ASTRO COMPASS
The MKII Astro Compass was manufactured by Sperti, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio during the World War II era. It was used by aircraft operating in high latitudes to indicate true heading in areas where the magnetic compass becomes unreliable due to large errors in variation and the angle of dip of the earth's magnetic field. When latitude, local hour angle and declination are set on the compass, and the sighting vanes are aligned with the celestial body, the true heading of the aircraft is indicated on the true course dial. The compass is levelled using transverse and longitudinal bubble assemblies. The Astro Compass has a base which may be attached to the aircraft structure. The Astro Compass comes in a black bakelite case with a set of instructions. Both are in excellent condition. The instrument has been lubricated and tested for accuracy and proper operation. This is an excellent instrument for practical use in the determination of true direction and is also unique as a collector's item.
